Friday night at the Winter Park Civic Center, the Gay & Lesbian Community Services of Central Florida (GLCS) held what is becoming an annual "The Prom That Never Was," in hopes of raising enough cash to fund a permanent building to house GLCS offices and resource library. My girlfriend and I have attended two of these "FABULOUS" events.

The night started on an appropriate note with the events organizer, Chris Alexander, receiving a Service Award from the UCF Gay & Lesbian Student Union. Lambda High "Home of the Fighting Poodles" was in full effect! Bring on the show! The "Generation Raised on Television" theme came complete with characters playing the roles of Endora an Serena of Bewitched, Patsy and Adena of Absolutely Fabulous, Peg Bundy of Married with Children and the 'Tampon Lady' (watch it! you could take and eye out with those things). Of course, the usual generationally based music from the 40's through the 90's was played, with a game show as a comical interlude between musical periods.

Michael Wanzie - director and playwright of "Lizzie Borden" an off Broadway musical - MCed the event and kept the crowd guessing as he traversed through the night with sidesplitting drunken remarks. As with any good prom, there was a prom photographer (Jill Porter Photography), tuxedos, and entertainment the likes of which you would never find in this Orlando.

Seeing that my prom years in high school were usually spent at live shows like Pink Floyd or Ozzy Osborne, this prom was the one I never had as well. This year's prom (as always) gave a lot of my les/bi/gay friends an opportunity to be themselves in a comfortable, entertaining environment. We need more of these quality events in Orlando.
