With the advent of such movies as Swingers, the Retro movement is in full swing if you excuse the pun. It's a taste that's recently become sweet to my ears, so when I heard that the Atlanta band Donkey was playing at the Sapphire, I had to check them out.
The name Donkey had been spun around like a dance step from the get go. However, until a year ago I had not taken the time to get my Jackass in gear and ride the Donkey groove. Since then I have burned a laser notch into their release of Slick Night Out. And they always play the Saphire Supper Club at least four to five times a year. This is a great venue to see them in because of its intimate quality. Donkey's style really lets loose in a room where everyone can see and everyone can be seen.
So there I was, not adorned in the now hip lounge attire that seems to be so prevalent with these types of shows. As I sipped on one of many fine beers, I felt the rumble that could mean only one thing: it was time to swing! Donkey has a real major key feel - they're fun and truly appear to enjoy what they do. They have a neo-elvis-swing touch-o-ska-groovie thing going for them. Their appearance is mild in nature, and their stage show lives up to the feel of the music - laid back.
So grab your girl or your boy (or go stag) because the crowd is movin' and music is in the air...Dance, Donkey DANCE!
