Last month I received a call from local promoter Chris Sapone, who asked me to let Mustard Plug perform in my store. Only two weeks earlier, I'd opened my doors for business and never had any intention of hosting live shows at the store. Chris, also a member of the local band "Kosmo Kramers", explained that no Orlando clubs would cater to an all ages show without charging a hefty admission fee, especially on weekends.

Being a fan of "Mustard Plug" myself, I definitely wanted the band to play in Orlando, but I turned Chris down as my store, d.i.y. records (located at 1709 N. Mills Ave.) is very small. I didn't think it would hold this band's expected draw - they are one of the more popular ska bands touring today. I was not so much afraid of any potential damages a show might create as I was that I'd have to turn some local fans away.

Big things come in small packages

A week before the show, Chris called again and explained there simply was no other club in Orlando that could let them perform. It was either my venue or none at all. I began preparations for "Mustard Plug".

I had obtained my occupational license for retail only and was nervous about having musicians perform here - I wasn't sure if I was licensed for such an event. Fortunately, the occupational license folks in Orlando told me I could do the show if I did not charge admission. Only donations would be allowed. That was fine with me as all monies would go to the bands anyway.

This innocent field tranforms into a musical haven

This week I have obtained the necessary permits to charge admission and will continue to allow local and national bands use of my store for performances.
