Scott Freeland is one of the most talented new sculpture artists who has hit this town since recent memory. With the world slowly gearing up for the Gen-X takeover, some are shining brighter than others. Freeland breaks the mold of the starving artist. He takes on the realistic responsibility of making money at what he does best to support his personal art, by working with his hands as a partner in the Exoscope Design and Fabrications Company of Sanford, which opened in 1994. Scott and many others sculpt giant creations out of environmental sound foam (sounds like an oxymoron, huh?). He then sprays the work with urethane, Exoscope's finishers refine the work, and out it goes! Exoscope has created works for Disney, Universal Studios, FAO Schwartz, Orlando International Airport, Six Flags, Renaissance Entertainment and the list keeps on going like the pink bunny.

Born in Caro, Michigan, this Yankee turned cracker when he moved to St. Petersburg as a teenager. Attending the Ringling School of Art and Design and graduating with a degree in Fine Arts in 1993, Scott never looked back.

Now married, Scott and his wife Megan live outside of Orlando. Scott continues the quest to be a respected ceramic artist. At Freeland Studios (opened circa 1992), he sells handmade custom ceramics to private buyers, galleries and interior designers. Scott has created pieces that range from two-inches high and less than a pound to five-feet tall and over two hundred pounds. The base root of the work is Raku Pottery - once the work has been sculpted or dried in a kiln, it's glazed and fired. Now firing, as I learned, allows for the small bits of glass and sand (the glaze) on the ceramic piece to fuse. Once the work is pulled from the fire, it is placed in sawdust or newspaper (which causes instant fire ...ka-boom!), and that's when the piece takes on it colors and luster. A somewhat ancient process, this is being practiced and loved by a not-so-ancient Mr. Freeland. Scott has shown his work in Central Florida galleries, as well as on the west coast of Florida, and he has a vast array of ceramics in private collections.
