Working with Miramax Doesn't Sour Curdled's Producer
Between showings at the Enzian on Thursday night (02/13/97) Curdled
producer and co-writer John Maass participated in a question and answer
session with the audience. While most of the questions posed focused on
budget, John took the opportunity to chronicle Curdled's evolution from a
short to a feature. John found working with Miramax (who funded the 2.5
million dollar budget) was easier than one might expect. While Miramax
execs. did ask for a few changes in the script (most of which were
ultimately not implemented), they were reportedly easy going and not very
pushy. John attributes this to the relatively low budget. Production went
smoothly over the five weeks of shooting though some of the principle
players behind the cameras were asked to wear many hats. John likened this
to making the original in that money was scarce but commitment and team
work helped pull the project together.
The feature length version has stayed fairly true to the original with
extra moneys being spent on named actors and on an excellent, Latin
music-based, sound track. The transition to feature was made possible by a
chance encounter with filmmaker Quentin Tarantino who executive produced
the film.
