So, you're an independent filmmaker, film professional, film student. You thrive on creative expression. You yearn for a place where you can meet like-minds to conceptualize, share resources, learn. Does such a place exist in Central Florida? Sure there are events to attend, clubs to hang out in, sets to network on, school associations, but is there an entity that is known as the heartbeat, the resource mecca of independent film?

Now there is. A handful of Central Florida filmmakers recently got together in conjunction with Enzian Theater to create The FARM, a media arts center committed to the development, support, and promotion of independent film, video, and related media. It is The FARM's desire to foster the growth and prosperity of independent filmmaking in Central Florida by providing information, services, and programs to FARM members.

So, you say, why should you join? First of all, The FARM will provide you, the independent filmmaker, with information and resources galore. Databases are currently being compiled including resumes, festivals, vendor resources (both local and national), grant information, just to name a few. A library of videos, film encyclopedias, books, trades, and magazines is also in development - including items that are difficult to find in a book store or at the library.

Next, The FARM has a programming schedule of seminars, workshops, screenings, and members-only events that are worth the cost of membership alone. They will focus on every stage of filmmaking that you can imagine - development and packaging, financing, marketing, the latest and greatest in film equipment and technology. You've probably seen seminars on these topics sometimes costing in the hundreds of dollars. Uh huh. Hello, you're an independent filmmaker, not a bank! Screenings and members-only events will be pure fun and entertainment featuring classic films, retro series, themed events.

Discounts and free items are always a plus. Part of The FARM membership includes the "Enzian Six-Pack" (not beer, too bad). The six-pack is actually 6 free admissions to Enzian Theater (worth $39). That's membership right there! Membership is only $35 per year. Other discounts include $4 admission to Enzian movies (normally $6.50), reduced rate on theater rental when you want to screen your film, and low-cost access to film, editing, and animation equipment. As a member, you will also be able to pick up Florida Film Festival tickets early (preferential treatment).

Other benefits include a central meeting place, networking, and volunteer opportunities at Enzian Theater and the Florida Film Festival.

This is just the beginning. Who knows what the future will hold -- more equipment, filmmaker grants - the sky is the limit. But you have to join. So, start by showing up at the membership kick-off party this Saturday, November 29, immediately following the Brouhaha Film and Video Showcase. You'll find the hip FARM crew at the Copper Rocket from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. The Copper Rocket (for those who don't know) is located one-half mile north of Enzian Theater in the Village Plaza. The local band Umoja will be on hand to provide live music while you enjoy free beer (ok, so you do get alcohol) and appetizers. See you there!
