What happens when you take an empty lifeless shopping mall, add dedicated artists with a vision, do some scrubbing, building and painting, stir in some organized management, marketing, traveling exhibits and quality performances, and then top it off with a dab of social gatherings? Well, it's not a cake, but it is the artsMall. The artsMall in Winter Park is a unique home to many studio artists, dancers, actors and other performing arts groups. It was meant to last six months to one year, but this September twelfth, they celebrated their second year.

ArtsMall was initially conceived as an arts "incubator" where artists and groups could refine their talents and gain recognition by showcasing their work. This concept allows artists a "hand up" by providing an inexpensive space to create, display, rehearse and perform, while encouraging them to grow and find success beyond these walls.

Through a recent change in management and the hard work and commitment of a core group of volunteers, the artsMall has had a "facelift" and is now much more inviting to visitors. The artsMall also serves as a bridge between the Central Florida community and its artists. During its second birthday celebration, artsMall called out to the community to come get involved, meet the artists, take a class, stroll through the galleries, attend a play or an art opening, and just experience the Central Florida arts scene.

As the positive reputation of the artsMall grows, the people of artsMall extend their gratitude to the Winter Park Mall's owner, Vadim Nikotine, and manager, The Morbitzer Group, for their support and generosity. And as the inevitable changes take place on this property, the artsMall is exploring options for future housing. We are actively searching for patrons as well as a centrally located building to carry on this arts 'community'.

The artsMall grew out of very little, both financially and materially, but when it was mixed with the right ingredients, it became something that reached beyond the dream. ArtsMall can happen again in a new location, with the soul and dedication to keep it alive and active. We are your local artists, and we bring tangible gifts to the community - not only in the artwork and performances themselves but also in the idea that art enhances your quality of life.
